What is GridGen?

GridGen is a utiliity sponsored solar program offered through Pioneer Energy. Customers who sign up for GridGen enjoy all the benefits of solar and battery storage installed on their home with no upfront costs and without the longterm maintenance of owning the system.

How does GridGen save you money? The GridGen system replaces higher-priced PG&E power with lower-priced GridGen power. You remain connected to PG&E, but the power your system generates is billed at a lower fixed rate for 25 years. That means immediate savings and long-term rate stability.

Your GridGen energy simply appears as a line item on your existing PG&E / Pioneer bill.

Lower rate.  Same bill.  Simple.

Why this is different from traditional solar?  Traditional solar usually means private financing, separate / confusing contracts, and a second bill from a solar provider.

GridGen simplifies all of that. Solar systems are installed by GridGen-certified installers, but pricing, rules, and billing are handled through the GridGen Program (utility backed) and tied directly to your existing PG&E account, showing as a line item on your existing PG&E bill.

One program. One bill. Fewer moving parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about the PG&E Bill Reduction Program (GridGen) in Placer, Nevada, and El Dorado Counties.

1) What is the PG&E Bill Reduction Program (GridGen)? +

GridGen is a PG&E-integrated solar and battery program offered through Pioneer Community Energy. It is designed to help eligible residents reduce long-term PG&E costs while gaining backup power and more predictable energy pricing.

2) What makes GridGen different from traditional solar? +

Historically, solar has been offered through private solar companies with separate contracts, financing, and billing. GridGen is different: it is a utility-facilitated program backed by the CPUC and delivered through Pioneer Community Energy. Everything stays tied to your PG&E account, appears on one bill, and is administered by a public energy provider—reducing complexity and simplifying the process.

3) Who is eligible to participate? +

Homeowners and renters in Placer, Nevada, and El Dorado Counties may be eligible if they are PG&E customers in good standing and have qualifying roof solar access. Final eligibility depends on the property and system design.

4) Is there a credit check? +

No traditional FICO-based credit check is required. The program focuses on PG&E account standing and property qualification rather than credit scores.

5) How does billing work? +

GridGen charges appear as a clear line item on your regular PG&E bill. The program starts at a lower energy rate than current PG&E pricing and follows a long-term structure with an approximate 1.9% annual increase over a 25-year term.

For comparison, PG&E electricity rates have historically increased at an average of ~8.7% per year, which means GridGen is designed to deliver immediate savings with increasing cost separation over time through long-term price predictability.

6) What if I already have solar? +

Many participants use GridGen to add onto an existing solar system, often with the goal of reducing or eliminating their annual PG&E true-up bill.

In some cases, battery-only additions may also be available for homes that already have solar. All add-on options are reviewed and confirmed during the eligibility and design evaluation.

7) What can the battery power during an outage? +

The battery is typically designed to support essential circuits such as lighting, refrigeration, Wi-Fi, key outlets, and certain medical equipment. The final backup configuration is selected during system design.

8) How long does the process take? +

Most projects move from eligibility review to activation in approximately 6–8 weeks under current timelines. Permitting, utility approvals, and city processing can occasionally extend this timeframe.

9) What happens if I sell my home? +

Most participants either transfer the agreement to the new owner or purchase the system at fair market value. Available options are reviewed prior to enrollment.

10) ¿Hay información disponible en español? +

Sí. Podemos atenderle completamente en español y proporcionar documentos, recordatorios y comunicaciones bilingües. Seleccione “Español” en el formulario para recibir asistencia en español.
